Animal tattoos are among the most popular of all tattoo designs. Theriomorphism is the word used to describe the attributing of animal characteristics to a human being. Since the dawn of time, humans have aligned themselves, and the images of their gods, to animal forms and spirits.
Popular animals for tattoos are Bat, Bear, Buffalo, Bison, Cat, Deer, Dog, Leopard, Cheetah, Jaguar, Panther, Elephant, Horse, Lion, Monkey, Tiger, Wolf, Coyote, Fox, Mountain Lion and Puma.
From Egyptian gods with the head of a jackal or body of a lion, to European stories of werewolves and vampires, legends of animal/human crossovers abound. Some of the most famous of these are the transformation tales from Native American tribes.
Getting an animal tattoo with symbolic meaning or an animal tattoo with meaning behind it can be truly rewarding. It can mean spiritual aspects that are self-serving, cooperation with others, self-confidence, intellectual freedom, an independent personality, a helpful friend, or a symbol of longevity and vigilance. It depends upon the type of an animal tattoo.
More About Animals
The word "animal" comes from the Latin word animalis, meaning "having breath". In everyday colloquial usage the word incorrectly excludes humans—that is, "animal" is often used to refer only to non-human members of the kingdom Animalia. Animals have several characteristics that set them apart from other living things. Animals are eukaryotic and multicellular, which separates them from bacteria and most protists.
Animals are generally considered to have evolved from a flagellated eukaryote. Their closest known living relatives are the choanoflagellates, collared flagellates that have a morphology similar to the choanocytes of certain sponges. Molecular studies place animals in a supergroup called the opisthokonts, which also include the choanoflagellates, fungi and a few small parasitic protists.
The first fossils that might represent animals appear in the Trezona Formation at Trezona Bore, West Central Flinders, South Australia. These fossils are interpreted as being early sponges. They were found in 665-million-year-old rock.
